“Upstairs” is a current work in progress that serves as a dramatic and musical memorial to the lives of the 32 LGBT and allied victims of the 1973 arson fire at the Upstairs Lounge in New Orleans, LA.
Considered by many to be the largest hate crime against LGBT people in U.S. history, the Upstairs fire is sometimes seen as an example of the dark days of LGBT history, and a lesson in the perils of silence.
Conceived as a 32-person choral a capella work, the piece will give voice to the victims of the fire, and is scheduled to premier next year, in time for the 40th anniversary of the fire.
